The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Soldier Center has an immediate vacancy for a Materials Engineer (or related field) to join our team of skilled scientists, engineers, and equipment specialists in Natick, Massachusetts. The incumbent will work in the Distinctive Materials Solution Branch within the Protective Systems Division, Soldier Protection Directorate. This is a full-time Term appointment not to exceed 2 years, which may be extended or made permanent without further competition. This vacancy is being filled utilizing Direct Hire Authority, which can appoint qualified candidates possessing a bachelor's degree to Professional Scientific and Engineering positions within the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (DEVCOM SC). 

The Soldier Center participates in an alternative personnel system known as the Personnel Demonstration Project (PDP).  The DB-02 pay band is equivalent to the GS- 5 step 1 to GS-11 step 10. The full performance level of the position is a DB-03, equivalent to the GS-12 step 1 to GS-14 step 10 grade level. Salary will be set commensurate with experience.

The Soldier Protection Directorate (SPD) executes client-focused scientific research, development, engineering, and testing to provide integrated materiel technology solutions to enhance the survivability of Warfighters and Homeland Defenders for today and tomorrow. SPD empowers and protects Soldiers and enables small unit dominance through revolutionary customer-focused research, development, engineering, and analysis. SPD provides science and technology, research, development, and engineering to the Army and other services.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

The Distinctive Materials Solution Branch is made up of five federal employees and will expand to a total of seven. Duties will involve quality management and manufacturing innovation initiatives tied to operations and production. This position will further expand technical acumen aligned with the duplication of production and post-production/quality control efforts as a part of contingency planning. The position requires polymer extrusion work, and includes the following:

  • Manufacturing/production focused work
  • ISO 9001/Quality Control Process
  • ISO Document Control/Planning
  • Materials/manufacturing innovation initiatives

**Due to the nature of the work, a Secret clearance is required. Also, the work schedule will involve additional hours outside of core hours, which may include weekend work.
