The DEVCOM Soldier Center is seeking several student interns (bachelor's and master's degree candidates) for summer internships at the Soldier Center in Natick, MA.  These students will support scientists and engineers on projects for approximately 8-12 weeks and will be placed on a Temporary appointment not to exceed 1 year.  Students will work a full-time schedule during the summer and may have the opportunity to work on a part-time basis during the school year.

These positions are within the Student Trainee Series as part of the STEM Student Employment Program (SSEP) offered by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Soldier Center and are being filled utilizing the Direct Hire Authority for students pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in a STEM career field within the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Soldier Center (SC).

All positions classified to a student trainee series should be titled Student Trainee followed by a parenthetical title consistent with the occupational field involved; for example: Student Trainee (Engineering and Architecture), Student Trainee (Physical Science), etc.

The employee provides technical support to engineers/scientists as a student trainee. He or she serves as an engineering technician performing a variety of duties requiring knowledge of detailed procedures with the work being characterized by some readily acquired skill and/or knowledge in an engineering/scientific field.

0899: Engineering Series - Employees at this level perform trainee tasks under close and detailed technical supervision, using equipment, instruments, or software related to a technical professional field. Employees are responsible for learning basic methods, techniques, and procedures and carrying out specific tasks of limited scope and complexity that are generally minor phases of a larger project or assignment. Duties typically involve correlating data, recognizing discrepancies in results, and participating in an experiment, study or research project by providing support to higher-level personnel. Work is reviewed “in progress”, and upon completion for conformance to instructions and established requirements.  Performs other duties as assigned.

1399: Physical Science Series - Employees at this level perform trainee tasks under close and detailed technical supervision, using equipment, instruments, or software related to a technical professional field. 0099: General Student Trainee Series - The student trainee series in each Occupational Group includes all trainee positions that involve periods of pertinent formal education and periods of employment in a Federal agency. The education and employment must be part of a formal student employment program. The level of education and experience completed by the student is a major consideration in establishing the level of on-the-job training and work assignments during periods of employment.

 

Job Duties/Responsibilities

The job duties/responsibilities will vary per position. This can be discussed in further detail during an interview with the hiring manager, should an interview be extended. The student will perform systematic, critical, intensive investigation directed toward the development of new or fuller scientific or technical knowlege of the subject studied. He or she will perform a variety of duties requiring knowledge of detailed procedures with the work being characterized by some readily acquired skill and/or knowledge in their respective field.

4 hours of annual leave
