The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Soldier Center has an immediate vacancy for a Textile Technologist (or related field) to join our team of skilled scientists and engineers in Natick, Massachusetts. The incumbent will work on the Soldier Clothing, Footwear, and Integration Team on a full-time Term appointment not to exceed 2 years. The position may be extended or made permanent without further competition. This vacancy is being filled utilizing the Direct Hire Authority, which can appoint qualified candidates possessing a bachelor's degree to Professional Scientific and Engineering positions within the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (DEVCOM SC). 

DEVCOM Soldier Center participates in an alternative personnel system known as the Personnel Demonstration Project (PDP).  The DB-02 pay band is equivalent to the GS- 5 step 1 to GS-11 step 10. The full performance level of the position is a DB-03, equivalent to the GS-12 step 1 to GS-14 step 10 grade level.

The Soldier Protection Directorate (SPD) executes client-focused scientific research, development, engineering, and testing to provide integrated materiel technology solutions to enhance the survivability of Warfighters and Homeland Defenders for today and tomorrow. SPD empowers and protects Soldiers and enables small unit dominance through revolutionary customer-focused research, development, engineering, and analysis. SPD provides science and technology, research, development, and engineering to the Army and other services.

The Soldier Clothing, Footwear, and Integration Team (SCFIT) provides technical and programmatic support, enabling Program Managers to design, develop, and procure Army uniforms, footwear, and individual equipment. It also conducts late-stage applied research, advanced concept development, and integration of protective systems to maximize Soldier performance and protection.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

This series includes classes of professional positions involving scientific and technological work with textiles or fibers, including investigation, development, production, processing, evaluation, and application.

 

Soldier Clothing, Footwear, and Integration Branch Background: The Soldier Clothing, Footwear, and Integration Branch (SCFIB) provides technical and programmatic support, enabling Product Managers to develop and procure Army uniforms, footwear, and individual equipment in a timely, cost‐effective manner. It also conducts late-stage research, advanced concept development, and integration of protective systems to maximize Soldier performance and protection.

SCFIB is part of the Protection Equipment Division within the Soldier Protection Directorate at DEVCOM Soldier Center. The Soldier Protection Directorate is responsible for planning and executing core Army S&T programs, developing next generation body armor, head protection, clothing, and individual equipment. 


You will serve as a Textile Technologist or Engineer within the Soldier Protection Directorate, Protection Equipment Division, Soldier Clothing, Footwear, and Integration Branch to work with footwear engineers on the team to support the execution of military footwear research efforts, industry contracts, and manufacturing facility development efforts. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Interface with industry partners to support development and manufacturing initiatives within the domestic military footwear and clothing industry

    Support internal footwear lab development and funding efforts

  • Act as a project officer to develop, improve, and maintain new and existing footwear and clothing items in support of military Service members

  • Collaborate with a staff of multidisciplined engineers, clothing designers, pattern makers, textile technologists, physical scientists, and acquisition management professionals with technical, logistical, and military backgrounds

  • Manage technical and acquisition-related projects and programmatic planning, guiding, conducting, and coordinating a wide range of activities involving production design, testing, validation, including limited user assessments, and development

  • Manage and report on a wide array of footwear, clothing, and textile testing

  • Draft and maintain item and project documentation as appropriate, such as product descriptions, military specifications, technical packages, item change documents, and certifications

  • Foster internal and external customer relationships, providing reliable and effective support and meeting customer needs on project cost, schedule, and performance

  • Program areas you may support include Combat Boots, Athletic Shoes, Combat, Dress and Service Uniforms, Maternity Uniforms, Cold Weather Clothing, and Physical Training Uniforms

  • Ensure that the organization's vision and values are integrated into the team's work plans, work products and services

  • Communicate to the team leaders/project officers/program managers about the assignment, project, contracting issues, technical problem to be solved, actionable events, milestones, schedules and issues under review, and time frames for completion
